Description
Many of us have a default strum pattern we prefer to use, no matter what song we are trying to play. However, one important way to deepen our ear and improve our musicality is to expand to different strum patterns, allowing for more nuance and rhythmic variation in our playing. So, let’s stretch a little outside of our comfort zones …
What will I learn?
This workshop will start with the question: How do I know what strum pattern is most appropriate for a song? From there, we will look at different elements of rhythm to listen for in original recordings, and how to translate those in our playing. These elements will include the basics of beat and time, as well as deeper nuances of syncopation and style. We’ll get a feel for each strum patterns by playing through a series of song snippets that represent these different options. By the end, you’ll be ready to dive into your own repertoire of music to apply your new learning to your own practice.
I recommend this workshop for players who are comfortable with:
- playing 4-chord songs in the keys of C, D, G, and/or A
- strumming a basic 4-count strum pattern: please watch this video tutorial
- taking risks to learn new techniques and material
